South Africa continues to have large numbers of people who have no permanent housing or access to health care. This vulnerability is compounded by harsh climatic conditions; crippling drought in summer and snow and sub-zero temperatures in winter.
The South African Red Cross Society is far more than just a disaster relief organisation. We work together with communities to help them achieve a better quality of life and to foster human dignity.
Red Cross Activities include:
- The training of volunteers in Home Based Care to assist individuals and their families living with H.I.V.
- Tracing and re-uniting family members world wide
- Teaching and providing first aid to save lives
- A flying doctor service with volunteer medical doctors who hold free clinics
- Caring for those in crisis during and after a disaster
