Salivary gland disorders refer to conditions that cause swelling and pain in the saliva producing tissues around the mouth. Salivary glands produce saliva (spit), which moistens food aid chewing and swallowing. Saliva contains enzymes that begin the digestion process. Saliva also cleans the mouth by washing away bacteria and food. Saliva keep the foot moist and helps to keep dentures or orthodontic appliances (such as retainers), in use, it helps you digest food. It also cleans the mouth and antibodies that can kill bacteria.
There are three pairs of salivary glands: what is parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands. Scattered throughout the mouth and throat are small salivary glands, located just below the mucous membranes lining. Parotid glands are sitting in front of the ears, while the submandibular and sublingual glands below the lining of the floor of the mouth pushes the inner side of the jaw. Problems with salivary glands can cause glands to become irritated and swollen. This causes symptoms like a bad taste in the mouth, swelling in front of the ears have difficulty opening the mouth, dry mouth, pain in the face or mouth, face and neck of Abnormal tastes, foul tastes. Salivary glands may become inflamed (irritate), as infection, tumor, or stones.
